When Epic created Horde for Gears 2 , the studio expected that the mode would only be used by friends playing locally. However, Horde became a runaway online success, as players gorged on the highly addictive co-operative challenge. For Gears of War 3 , Epic decided that it was important to inject a greater variety to the "shallow" experience of Horde, while also providing a clear sense of progression to keep players gripped.

The team judged that Horde was all about a "defence scenario", finding a position to dig in and stave off the waves of enemies. This led to the idea that each map should have a series of designated defendable command points, based around key factors such as elevation, closeness to spawn points, ammo dumps and so on.

At the start of each match, teams of players must select a base and then prepare for the onslaught. New maps, bigger enemies, greater diversity. We played Horde 2. We set up shop right in the middle of the ship, close to a gantry area for raining down fire and benefiting from a few good choke points on either side. There are various other maps available in Horde 2. The core mechanics of Horde are very much the same; its still a game that requires constant co-operation and teamwork to fend off the increasingly frantic waves of enemies.

However, Epic has created greater diversity in the enemies to keep players on their toes, while also listening to the community's wishes for more elaborate boss battles. Waves now bring standard Locust Drones, Boomers and Grenadiers, but also a range of new enemies, such as a spiked Kantus that must be killed with flame, mutated Lambent Dredges and a horrific centipede that must be shot away in sections from behind.

Each block of ten waves builds with sweaty anticipation to a boss encounter, which is really where the frantic action begins. Each boss fight brings the double trouble of two famous Gears monsters, including Brumaks, Reavers, Berserkers and the new Lambent Gunkur, which fires a volley of devastating goo. Boss waves also trigger a legion of Locust warriors to ramp up the difficulty, with level 50 being a truly momentous battle especially on hardcore difficulty.

Each boss has a specific strategy for taking them on, such as the Berserkers needing to be set on fire before being shot. But also, there are a variety of fortifications available that can make defending your command post that bit easier. New to Horde 2. Everything in the game is driven by an internal currency system. The enemies will in fact be split up between all three rooms.

Fighting with one room will concentrate the enemies in a smaller area. The second skull toggles "Hard Mode". Having hard mode on reduces the enemy spawn time to instant. During normal gameplay, enemies will slowly trickle from spawn points until a limit on the number of active enemies is reached.

Once enough enemies are killed, enemies begin spawning again. With hard mode activated, many enemies will spawn all at once. Once enough enemies are killed, a new wave of enemies will spawn instantly from the spawn points. This keeps the horde moving and allows you more kills in a shorter timespan.

These objects can be interacted with to heal you and get new weapons and equipment before the next wave, respecively.

The level up statue can be used to replenish consumables Firepots and throwing weapons and get the next weapon level if you have enough kills before the next wave. The match ends when all living players die, or when you beat all 25 waves of the horde.

The final wave of Horde Crypts is in a special arena, away from the rest of the map. The benefit of this map is obvious. When each wave starts, you'll be able to use turrets and long-range rifles to take out the smaller Locust.

As things get harder, the Locust will be funneled up the stairway, making them easy pray for the turret at the top of the stairs.

Once you've got a solid defense on the stairs, you should consider buying the Command Towers to the left and right of the stairs. These will allow you to build razor wire at the very bottom of the stairs, slowing and damaging any Locust who try to come into your base. Don't buy any of the defenses that are beyond the stairs, though. You'll need every dollar to keep your base in working order.

Every once in a while, Horde mode will give your team a challenge. These involve mini-objectives like "Get 8 execution kills in this wave" or "Make sure no one dies in this wave. It'll also cause weapon boxes to spawn, indicated by a dollar sign on the HUD. Most random guns on the ground will disappear after the end of a wave. Not so with weapon boxes, which will stick around until you use them. Since they generally have a handful of super weapons inside, you'd do well to wait until a boss wave Wave 10, 20, 30, etc.

Every ten waves, starting from wave 11, the horde grows stronger. The following chart shows how strong the Locust are at certain levels. For these holiday events, experience points tend to be multiplied by 10 or higher, sometimes up to 26x XP.
