In short, yes. All employed teaching staff, including headteachers, deputy heads and those with other responsibilities like Special Educational Needs Coordinators SENCOs are entitled to PPA equating to 10 per cent of their teaching hours. Teachers who have leadership responsibilities also have additional time out of the classroom for Leadership and Management time, but this is on top of, not instead of, PPA. If a part-time teacher works so few hours that their PPA time ends up being very small — such as 20 minutes a week — it can be combined into a longer session once a fortnight.
What can teachers do in PPA time? As such they should be planned for, with staff not routinely required to provide cover. Remember that how you use your PPA time is at your discretion. You cannot be directed to use PPA time for any particular purpose. It should be used exclusively for the planning, preparation and assessment that you, as a professional, deem necessary for your work. If for any exceptional circumstance or one-off event, any or all of your PPA time is given up, you should immediately seek a timetabled reimbursement for all of the time given up.
I use the hour before it starts and some of lunchtime to make the session even longer and I complete a great deal of work. Our extra non-contact time is a gesture which is indicative of our leadership team's commitment to reducing workload. The structure of our PPA time encourages collaborative working and the sessions are attended by senior leaders - our staff are vocal about how supported they feel by this set up.
